Sounds Like Love: Charity's "Yellow EP" (Review)
Sunshine and blue skies have arrived! The summer months are among us and as so much good music accompanies the season, nothing feels more appropriate than this Yellow EP by Detroit based artist, Charity (@charitytheartist). I’ve had the privilege of seeing this gorgeous songstress grace the mic with her presence at a few of our events and it’s simply breath-taking. I may be SUPER late to the show when it comes to this EP but “better late than never” is my motto is this case. Having initially being released in 2015, the EP is still pleasantly invading eardrums 2 years later so I had to check it out.
Possessing only 4 tracks, this short-and-sweet EP will leave you hungering for more. The track that initially caught my attention is the debut single entitled “Beautiful Moments”. Conceptualized by Charity herself, this amazingly artistic visual which accompanies the single takes you on a scenic exploration of the city of Detroit-- showcasing many of the gorgeous attractions and hidden gems that make it what it is. From a lyrical standpoint, the song is just as genius. Penning lines like “Why don’t we slow dance in some place we’re not allowed... ‘til the morning // Then make a masterpiece of whatever’s in the cabinet until it stops storming” really illustrate the imagery the songstress is trying to convey. In some senses, you don’t need the video because the song's lyrics perfectly elucidate it for you. But for your viewing pleasure, make sure you check out the video below!
Another amazing ballad you’ll run into on this 4-track EP is “Inspired.” Beginning with 8 bars of bass-ladened guitar strums coupled with Charity’s rhythmic acoustic plucks, you get the feeling you’re front row in the crowd of an MTV Unplugged session. Such an intimate scene is perfectly arranged so that lyrics like“...I got this thump in my chest and I’m full of regrets // for all the days I made it through without you...” can really be felt on an emotional level. This song is literally poetry in motion and the greatness doesn’t stop there. It continues on throughout the nearly four-minute duration of the song. I wish I could describe ALL the feels of this EP to you guys, but it’s best if you just hear it for yourself.
As a lover of music, I appreciate when an artist takes the time and patience with their craft to make a quality product that will stand the test of time. When you combine a collective of drums, piano, bass, acoustic guitar and the insanely soulful voice of Charity, the result is a project that STILL feels like the first time you ever listened to it, even 2 years later. I stand behind good music & foresee great things for such a shimmering star amongst us. The love doesn't stop here, though.
