A VAST majority of people normally greet a new week with feelings of laziness, anxiety and dread for what the work week holds. The other tiny minority of people (like myself) greeting the day with excitement for new opportunities, and also new music. Music is essential to the mindset you carry, so to get you through the first 24 hours of your week, I've compiled a list of tracks that will keep you powering through your Monday and steam-rolling through the rest of the week. Let’s get to it!
1.) “What A Feeling (prod. By DaG)” by Supakaine
Holding it down for the “Murda Mitten” are two local favorites in the Metro music scene. Detroit’s Supakaine (@supakaine) & the 734 super-producer, DaG (@glennmasta), have teamed up again to bring you Supakaine’s latest effort. The duo kick heavy rhythms from the jump. The song begins with an eerie, yet hypnotic sounding sample, followed by hi-hats of different variations then finally building with the bellowing bass and a few appropriate kicks to provide the bounce we’re all looking for. With the foundation set, ‘Kaine jumps into the song with thoughtful bars such as “Since I came up, these n***as start talkin’ down, that’s ironic // When I blaze up, it gotta be Haze blunts, not no chronic,” and “Must be smokin’ laced blunts, n***gas talkin’ all that nonsense // All that time spent running in circles when you coulda been focused on profit.” The lyrical onslaught continues for the entire three minutes and fifteen seconds of the track. By holding down the #1 spot, I've officially classified this as audio dope, so throw your headphones in, listen to it rock up, and get yo’ funky ass outta bed.
2.) “Made You Look (Freestyle)” by Killa P
What is a Pinnacle? The height of your success? A sometimes cherry-flavored Vodka? The answer is neither. Pinnacle ( or Pinnacle Ent., rather) is a Michigan-based rap duo comprised of artists Killa P (@itskillap) and Cuzen (@pinnaclecuzen). Though the two often do songs together, this track specifically is lyrically man-handled by Killa P, making it onto the #2 Spot on the list. Directly borrowing the “Made You Look” instrumental by hip-hop legend, Nas, Killa P brings the same energy you remember from the original. Flowing with conviction and confidence, Killa pens punchline-ridden bars like “This sh*t mine, I ain’t even gotta ask for it // I just skip through the scene like fast-forward // If I want it, I'll go and drop a bag on it // Set up shop and have the cash runnin’ like bath water.” It’s this type of flow that the game is missing. The clever creativity of true lyricism and well thought out punchlines make you want to keep listening to see which similes will occur next. This is the perfect joint to throw on on the way to work. So listen below and have a concert in your car.
3.) “ALI (prod. by ReedTheSuperman) by Syeed Ali
Here’s the mid-morning pick-me-up you were looking for. Landing the 3rd spot on the must-have joints is an artist we’ve covered not he blog before. After dropping his FiVE EP about a year ago, Syeed Ali (@feelmenowlisten) has silently been dropping heat on his Soundcloud. His most recent release deserves some attention due to its addictive beat and raw lyrics. First off, I’m a huge fan of songs that make its listeners relate to them by telling a story. Whether Ali is talking about a taking a pay cut and trying to get his money up, or hitting a lick for the Jordans (which he mentioned he can’t even dunk in, mind you,) the combination of rhyme, story-telling and awesome production make this offering an amazing selection to throw on when you feel yourself starting to drag. Peep the heat BELOW.
4.) “L.I.M.G. (Liquor In My Glass)” by A. Wood
This final entry is probably one of my favorite songs right now because it ride the same vibe that I’m always on. The final slot on the must-haves list is a song by someone who is VERY well known in the Detroit music scene. This soulful and songful effort comes from Detroit producer, A. Wood (@drs_woodondabeat). Known for his notable production credits for celebrities like Jim Jones, Icewear Vezzo, Peezy, and Neisha Neshae (to name a few), Wood has decided to step from behind the boards and create a classic for himself. Crooning over guitar strums, trebling bass lines and subtle R&B snaps, Wood opens up about how about how the alcoholic beverage in his cup might be sending him signals from a potential young woman across the way. Accompanied with a visual, once you hear the song, you will wonder-- just like me-- why this song does not have more plays! This song is truly a gem and also provides the perfect background music to conclude your evening. Listen and watch BELOW.
Well I hope you’ve enjoyed your Monday the same way I have. I'm discovering tunes daily and delivering them to you. Happy to be here, Y’all. Keep riding the wave.
Stay True. Stay Fresh. Stay Laced.
